PRODUCT OVERVIEW

This women's 5-gauge double-breasted cotton cardigan is designed for fashion brands and private label buyers looking for a structured knitwear style with a tailored appearance. Made from 100% cotton, the 311g garment offers a balanced medium-weight hand feel. The 5GG construction gives the knit a visible chunky texture and enough body to support the cropped silhouette without making the garment excessively heavy. Compared with synthetic-heavy yarns, cotton provides a natural hand feel, good breathability, and a clean surface appearance suitable for transitional collections. The defining feature is the double-breasted front construction. Two parallel rows of metal buttons create a tailored, vintage-inspired appearance, while the wide lapel-style neckline adds a more structured fashion profile than a conventional knitted cardigan. Because the garment combines a relatively open 5GG structure with a 100% cotton yarn, the relationship between the front placket, button placement, and body dimensions is carefully controlled during assembly and finishing. The style can be developed as a baseline for private label collections. Buyers can customize the cotton yarn quality, button materials, button arrangement, body length, neckline proportions, and overall fit according to their target market and seasonal collection requirements.

MANUFACTURING CAPABILITY

  • Double-Breasted Front Symmetry Control: The main production challenge of this style is maintaining consistent symmetry between the two front sides. A small difference in front-panel length or placket width can become visually obvious once the two rows of buttons are fastened. During production, the left and right front panels are controlled against the same approved measurement specifications. Button positions are checked against the finished garment dimensions rather than relying only on the knitting program. This helps maintain consistent button spacing, front overlap, and overall symmetry across the bulk production run.
  • Cotton Knit Dimensional Stability: 100% cotton has limited natural elastic recovery and can relax during washing and wearing. This is particularly important for a 5GG cardigan because the chunky knit structure can change differently in the body, front plackets, and sleeves. The production process therefore includes controlled panel relaxation, washing tests, and finishing adjustments before bulk approval. The front placket and body are evaluated together to reduce differences in post-wash length and width, helping the cropped silhouette remain balanced after finishing.
  • Metal Button Load Distribution: Metal buttons create concentrated pulling force on a relatively open 5GG knit structure. If the button is attached directly to the knit without sufficient support, repeated fastening can gradually stretch the surrounding loops. For bulk production, button attachment is adjusted according to the button size, weight, and knit structure. Reinforcement on the reverse side can be added where required to distribute the pulling force over a larger area of the fabric. Button attachment and front-placket stability are checked during sample approval before bulk production.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do you keep the two rows of buttons symmetrical during bulk production? +
Double-breasted styles require consistent control of the left and right front panels. We work from an approved measurement set for the front panels, placket width, button spacing, and overlap. During assembly, the front construction is checked against the finished garment measurements to ensure that the two rows remain visually parallel and balanced across the production size range.
How do you prevent the 100% cotton knit from changing shape after washing? +
Cotton knitwear can relax and change dimensions because the fiber absorbs moisture and has limited natural recovery. Before bulk production, we evaluate the knitted panels and finished garment through controlled washing and relaxation processes. The body, sleeves, and front plackets are checked separately so that differences in shrinkage do not affect the overall cropped silhouette.
How do you prevent the metal buttons from stretching the 5GG knit structure? +
The button weight and the open 5GG knit structure can create concentrated pulling force around the attachment point. We select the button attachment method according to the hardware weight and knit construction. Where necessary, reinforcement is added to the reverse side of the knit to distribute the load and reduce stress on individual loops during repeated fastening.
Can we change the button arrangement or develop a different double-breasted front? +
Yes. The number of buttons, spacing, front overlap, placket width, and overall closure arrangement can be modified according to the brand's design. We can develop a new sample based on a tech pack, reference garment, or design drawing before bulk production.
Can this cardigan be developed in organic cotton? +
Yes. The style can be developed using certified organic cotton or other approved cotton yarn options, depending on the target certification requirements and material availability. Yarn selection may affect the final hand feel, stitch definition, weight, and production cost, so the final specifications are confirmed through sample development.
Can the cropped silhouette be changed to a regular or oversized fit? +
Yes. The body length, chest measurement, shoulder width, sleeve proportions, and overall fit can be adjusted for different markets. We can develop regular, relaxed, oversized, or extended-length versions while maintaining the double-breasted front design.
